House #16: The Probate House

January 3, 2010 · 0 comments

I’m not going to go so far as to say that we have our next house under contract, but I’m hopeful. I mentioned a couple months back that we were talking to a woman whose mother passed away and who had inherited a house…

After not hearing back from the woman for a couple months (and not having her phone number), my wife sent her a nice letter in the mail asking if she was still interested in selling the house. About a week later, we received an email response indicating that the house was still in probate, but should be cleared to sell by mid-January. We let the woman know that we were still very interested in potentially purchasing the house, and to let us know when we could stop by to take a look at it again (just to verify that it was still in the same condition).

This past week, she gave us a call and asked if we’d be interested in coming back this weekend. We took her up on her offer, and met her and her husband at the property this past Saturday. We chatted for quite a while, took a look around the house, got some history on it, etc. I let her know I’d call her back within 24 to make an offer and see if we could come to an agreement.

I called her back this morning, made an offer (a bit below what she wants for the house), and she seemed very interested. She’s still working through probate and will be meeting with her attorney on Wednesday to discuss what needs to be done to sell the house.

Hopefully we’ll actually be able to put the house under contract this week, and will be able to make this our next project…
