Hi Felicia -

This may be case by case with different utility companies, but in my experience, I've never had a utility company ask me to prove I was the owner of the property (yes, very weird). So, I've never had a problem getting utilities turned on for my inspections.

That said, I may have just gotten lucky, or it may be a location thing...

I know this is a 2-year old story, but I'm curious about how difficult it was to get the utilities turned on. My husband and I were looking at houses about a year ago and it was impossible to get utilities turned on (because we didn't own the home) - is this a local thing?

I think its a very smart move to hire the engineer. I have been told that horizontal cracks are the worst kind and the costliest to fix. I'll be interested hear the outcome and if he has a rough cost estimate.

I would disagree. A good deal is a good deal. It shouldn't matter if I need to spend $1000 on new windows or $5000 on a foundation repair (especially since I'm not doing the work). If I can find a property where the money I spend bringing it up to resale condition is much less than I can sell it for, it really shouldn't matter what issues I need to fix to get it there (again, especially if I'm not doing the work myself).

In theory, there shouldn't be any more stress involved in fixing this foundation problem than there is in fixing any other problem...just the added stress of having to negotiate with hard-headed banks... :)

It sounds like a loser. Even if you get a "good deal", it's not worth the stress and time. I'm sure there are many other opportunities you can take better advantage of!
